“Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see. Every breath we take, every step we take, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. The question is whether or not we are in touch with it. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment.”
― Thich Nhat Hanh, Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life

The speed of modern life causes so many of us to lose touch with a peace available to us in each moment. This is the message of world-renowned spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh. He gives us the practical examples of how to make positive use of everyday events and circumstances to redicsover this peace. Red Lights, my favorite annoyance, ringing telephones, missed calls, to many text messages can be a signals to call us back to our true selves. They are the “mindfulness” signals keeping our consciousness in the present moment. Our true joy and deepest satisfactions lie as close as our breath.

Peace Is Every Step is filled with commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh’s experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. Right where you are is where this process begins. It gives us the insight into how a deep meditative presence is always available. Mindfulness is the art of staying in this moment and not drifting off to the past or the future. Every experience in life is a potential lesson for us.

Nhat Hanh provides great exercises to increase our awareness. Perhaps becoming more aware of your own body, or being aware of your mind, “Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see. Every breath we take, every step we take, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. The question is whether or not we are in touch with it. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment.”
