What is Empowerment?

Empowerment, in general, is the expansion of freedom of choice and action. Many other terms are associated with empowerment such as, strength, power, self-reliance, choice, one’s rights, one’s values, independence, and freedom.

The term empowerment in our western culture currently emphasizes the ability to direct one’s own life and actions, and overcome inequalities. However, the term empowerment does have different meanings depending on the country, culture or even the political contexts. The question of women’s rights is less important in China than in the United States. However, in China equality of people in general is the concern.

Nish was forced to marry at 12 years old after her parents died. Afterwards, This 6th grader was not able to continue her schooling because of the social stigma of a married women in school. Nish, and other women like her in her community in Nepal had no options. Then an NGO opened a center in a nearby village. This all-female school empowered adult women through education, specifically helping them to learn how to read.
